After the Tesla factory hubbub the past couple of weeks, Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) Minister Tengku Zafrul has met up with Tesla representatives to discuss the company’s plans in Malaysia. Well, turns out, Tesla has made over $13.5 million worth of investments in Malaysia – that comes up to about RM59.1 million.
The investments look to be focused on the development of Tesla’s EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia. According to Zafrul, 52 Superchargers capable of up to 250kW charging, 52 AC wall chargers, and over 4,500 Tesla home chargers have been installed in Peninsular Malaysia.
Zafrul added that Tesla has also involved nine different Malaysian companies in the development of its EV charging infrastructure on our shores. On top of that, the company is even working with local institutes of higher learning for knowledge transfer and human capital development.
Beyond that, Zafrul discussed with Tesla on the potential of using battery energy storage technology in Malaysia to improve the efficiency and stability of the national grid too. The minister said that the system can potentially reduce energy costs and strengthen the national energy infrastructure.
Suffice to say this is a show of Tesla’s commitment to the Malaysian market; at least, in regard to its network of local EV charging stations. It’s worth noting that Tesla has not opened up any of its Superchargers here to non-Tesla vehicles yet. It was previously confirmed that at least 30% of the fast DC chargers will be made available to EVs from other brands.
