Magic: The Gathering’s Bloomburrow set was released earlier this month, and it is touted as Magic’s first all-animal expansion. Not only are there some gorgeous showcase woodland cards in the set, there are also collectable (and very expensive) Japanese raised foil anime cards in Bloomburrow.
Wizards of the Coast sent us quite a bit of products from the new set to unbox, including a box of Collector Boosters and Play Boosters; both of which cost (almost) a total of RM2,000. Will we be lucky enough to crack open a raised foil card? Or maybe even a seasonal Three Tree City?
Before we get to the meat of the unboxing, let’s check out some other Bloomburrow products that Wizards sent us first, starting with the Starter Kit. It includes two 60-card decks ready to play out of the box, making it ideal for folks who are just starting to get into Magic.
Each deck includes a traditional foil legendary creature, which are Bria, Riptide Rogue and Byrke, Long Ear of the Law. Aside from the two decks, you also get a deck box, though it’s not a particularly thick one; it’s really just a cardboard box to store your cards in between play sessions.
Next, we have the Bloomburrow Prerelease Pack. It comes with six Play Boosters from the set, a traditional foil year-stamped rare or mythic rare Bloomburrow promo card, a deck box, and a spindown life counter. Our promo card is Hired Claw, which is currently going for $2.49 (about RM10) on Card Kingdom.
If you want something a little bit more…well, extra, there’s the Bloomburrow Bundle. There are quite a number of items in the bundle, including nine Play Boosters, a traditional foil alternate-art Thundertrap Trainer, a number of basic lands – including some full-art ones – a spindown life counter, and a very nice card storage box.
Now, we have the big ticket item: the Bloomburrow Collector Booster box. Priced at a cool RM1,200 from Classroom – one of the most reputable game stores in Malaysia – it comes with 12 Collector Boosters, so that’s effectively RM100 a pack.
Of course, it’s priced as such because of what you can potentially get in a pack of Bloomburrow Collector Booster. What most players would want is certainly the Japanese raised foil anime card, and…we were lucky enough to get one! We opened both a regular Alania, Divergent Storm and a raised foil version, which is currently listed at a whopping $69.99 – that comes up to about RM305.
Beyond that, we also cracked a Maha, Its Feathers Night; this particular showcase version is priced at $27.99 (approximately RM122) now.
Last but not least is the box of Bloomburrow Play Boosters, which can be purchased locally for about RM740 from Classroom. It’s worth noting that this price is on the higher side, as a box of Play Booster typically go for around RM600 at release. Nonetheless, here are some of the cards that we managed to get in our box.
Unfortunately, we only cracked a regular Three Tree City, though it’s still quite a costly card at $24.99 (around RM110). We also got two copies of Ygra, Eater of All – the regular version is priced at $17.99 (~RM80), while the foil version goes for $16.99 (~RM75), though it is currently out of stock on Card Kingdom.
Another noteworthy card that we got is Innkeeper’s Talent; it is listed at $27.99 now (about RM120).
We haven’t seen an entirely non-human plane from a Magic: The Gathering set before, which is one of the most unique aspects of Bloomburrow as an expansion. If you’re keen to get it, Bloomburrow can be purchased right now in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Prerelease Packs, Bundle, and Starter Kit at your favourite local game store.
