MITI Dismisses Report of Tesla Abandoning Factory Plans in Southeast Asia

A source from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has dismissed a recent report by a Thai news portal of Tesla supposedly abandoning its factory plans in Southeast Asia. The report claimed that the US carmaker is no longer building an EV factory in the region with Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia as potential locations.

The source from MITI told Free Malaysia Today that the information did not come from official source; that is, from Tesla itself. “This report is not an official statement from Tesla, but quotes an unnamed source. Confirmation on the report would have to come from Tesla,” the source said.

Previously, Thai daily The Nation quoted a source from the government that Tesla will only focus on building its network of charging stations in Thailand. “Tesla is currently only discussing charging stations, with the factory plans suspended worldwide. They are not proceeding in Malaysia, Indonesia, or anywhere else except for China, America and Germany,” said the source.

It’s worth noting that talks of a Tesla factory in Malaysia didn’t come up previously, though PM Anwar did mention that Tesla and SpaceX have several large-scale investments lined up for the country. So far, Tesla continues to build its EV charging network in Malaysia with two showrooms already set up in Cyberjaya and Damansara Heights.
