Google Pixel 8a Official – Same Chip as Pixel 8, 7 Years Software Support From $499
May 8, 2024 Andrew Cheng

After numerous leaks – which is really not surprising anymore for Google’s hardware – the Pixel 8a is finally official. Sporting the same Google Tensor G3 chip as its higher-end Pixel 8 siblings, the Pixel 8a also comes with seven years of software support.

Of course, the seven years software support includes both Android OS upgrades and security updates; the Pixel 8a will benefit from Google’s Feature Drops too. While it makes sense for Google to provide robust software experience for its very own device, it’s still nice to see a mid-range phone receive such comprehensive software support.

As mentioned, the Pixel 8a is powered by Google’s latest Tensor G3 chip. That means it also gets all the AI-centric features found on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including Gemini, Best Take, and Audio Magic Eraser. Again, robust software experience, which has always been one of the main appeals of Pixel phones.

Other specifications of the Pixel 8a include a 6.1-inch 2400 x 1080 Actua OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a dual camera system (64MP primary + 13MP ultra-wide), a 13MP selfie camera, and a 4,492mAh battery.

The Google Pixel 8a is now available for pre-order in the US from $499; that comes up to about RM2,370. As usual, it is unlikely the Pixel 8a will be sold here in Malaysia officially, though we reckon parallel importers will bring in the phone in due time.
