Using Galaxy AI for Photo Editing – How Good Is It?
February 26, 2024 Andrew Cheng

We have tested quite a number of Galaxy AI features on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, including the ability to translate conversations in real time and the very useful Circle to Search feature. There’s also one other component of Galaxy AI that can be quite fun to play with: AI photo editing.

With that in mind, we took some images we shot with the Galaxy S24+ to see what kind of results Galaxy AI can generate. While the edited images are…well, a bit of a mixed bag, we definitely enjoyed experimenting with the AI photo editing feature.

But before we get to the results, let’s quickly talk about the Galaxy S24+’s camera hardware. Its triple camera system is made up of a 50MP main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 10MP telephoto lens that can do 3x optical zoom. It’s quite a versatile camera array with three different focal lengths.

Yes, this camera hardware is relatively unchanged from last year’s Galaxy S23+, but the Galaxy S24+ can still perform well in all kinds of lighting conditions. You can see this in our full review of the latter, as well as with the sample shots below.

Speaking of which, let’s see what Galaxy AI can generate with some sample shots we snapped with the Galaxy S24+. The original images are on the left, while the right samples have been edited with Galaxy AI – you can tell by the icon on the bottom left of the image.

Suffice to say Galaxy AI can generate some…interesting results. We started off with some small changes in the first set of images by just removing the building in the bottom left, and we progressively made more substantial changes in the following photos.

As you can see in the second set of samples, we decided to change the sky, and Galaxy AI did more than that. Not only did the AI decided to change the roof design of the buildings too, it even added more greeneries to the image. All in all, it does make for a more “dramatic” shot.

For the third set of images, we changed almost the entire composition of the shot. We edited the sky, traffic cone, and even the foreground. To be honest, I’m quite surprised that Galaxy AI decided to add a puddle and even more trees to the image.

Overall, Galaxy AI can generate some interesting results, though there’s definitely room for improvement. While it can remove objects quite well, the generative AI does lack proper texturing when filling in missing details, resulting in shots that look…well, unnatural.

Nonetheless, beyond AI photo editing, Samsung’s Galaxy AI can do a slew of other things, which we covered extensively in various articles. Give them a read if you’d like to learn more about various aspects of Galaxy AI and the Samsung Galaxy S24 series.
