It’s no secret that both Proton and Perodua will be releasing their very own EVs sometime in 2025, as revealed by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). But what we don’t know is how many EVs will be released by our national carmakers, and in Proton’s case, the brand could be launching more than one electric vehicle.
This was teased by the CEO of Proton himself, Li Chunrong, at Proton’s Chinese New Year media appreciation dinner tonight. He said that Proton will be introducing its first EV “very soon,” with the possibility of a second EV model following suit in six to eight months’ time.
However, no specific timeline was revealed, though there’s a good chance Proton is on track to meet the 2025 timeline outlined by MITI. Needless to say, details are light on the upcoming Proton EV, and it remains to be seen if the national carmaker will be rebadging existing EV models from Geely; more specifically, the Chinese carmaker’s range of Geometry models.
Regardless, we won’t have to wait that long now for Proton to release its very own EV. After all, 2025 isn’t that far-off. It will certainly be interesting to see whether Proton or Perodua will be the first national carmaker to release a locally-assembled EV – hopefully with an affordable price tag too.
