Galaxy AI on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Is Incredibly Useful
January 29, 2024 Andrew Cheng

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is a very refined, very impressive flagship smartphone. It has many features that set it apart from its competition, including Galaxy AI, which is made up of several AI-powered features that are genuinely useful.

My absolute favourite feature of Galaxy AI is Interpreter. As its name suggests, it can translate spoken words to another language of my choosing. As far as I can tell, it can translate English to Chinese with reasonably good accuracy, and I use it quite a bit to train my (admittedly very limited) Chinese vocabulary.

The best part is, I don’t even need an internet connection for Interpreter to work; the translation is done completely offline on the S24 Ultra itself. This makes it great for situations where I am, say, out and about in a foreign country without any form of internet connectivity.

Circle to Search is another useful component of Galaxy AI. Developed by Google, I can just long press the home button or navigation bar to activate the feature. Once I’ve done that, I just have to circle on any subject that I want to get more information on.

In retrospect, Circle to Search is really a more convenient way to access Google Lens. While it’s not exactly a groundbreaking new feature, I still find it very useful, and it’s an incredibly handy feature when I need to quickly look up anything on my screen, even for identifying wildlife; more on this in a separate article.

Beyond that, Galaxy AI is also capable of AI photo editing, though I don’t use this feature particularly often. I can, for example, move a subject around or straighten an image, and the AI can perform generative edits to fill up the missing details, as you can see below.

For the most part, Galaxy AI’s photo editing is…decent, but there is certainly room for improvement. Depending on the subject, it has some issues properly isolating the subject, and it can take some time for the processing to be completed. However, when it does work, the results are actually quite good, and I imagine some folks will find this feature helpful.

There is no denying that the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is an impressive flagship smartphone, so it’s no surprise that it also costs quite a bit of money with a RM6,299 starting price. Nonetheless, if you’d like to learn more about the phone – and whether or not it’s worth the steep asking price – check out our comprehensive review of the S24 Ultra.
