Gallium nitride (GaN) chargers, compared to conventional ones, are known for their efficiency. This makes it possible to produce chargers capable of higher power output in a compact form factor, and the Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN charger is one such product.
Ugreen is well-known for its range of chargers and accessories, and the Nexode 300W charger is touted as the world’s first five-port GaN charger rated at this capacity. After using it for a couple of weeks, I’m certainly impressed with the Nexode 300W charger, even if its RM699 price tag is quite steep.
What It Is
That’s right, the Ugreen Nexode 300W charger costs a cool RM699 in Malaysia through and . Of course, you can get it at a lower price during promotional periods like the upcoming 12.12 sale tonight. I have personally seen the charger go down to RM599 on a couple of occasions.
Granted, that is still a lot of money for a charger, but the Nexode 300W charger does offer a number of benefits that outweigh its asking price (in my opinion). Of the five ports, the topmost USB-C port can output 140W at all times, even when the other four ports are in use.
The second and third USB-C ports, on the other hand, have a max output of 100W, though it can go down to 65W and 45W respectively depending on the overall ports that are in use. As for the fourth USB-C port, it has a max output of 45W, while the sole USB-A port can do 22.5W.
Besides that, the Nexode 300W charger also comes with what Ugreen dubs “Thermal Guard” system that monitors temperature changes in real-time. This ensures that connected devices are protected against overheat, overcharge, and excessive current, as Ugreen puts it. I’ll elaborate on the thermal performance of the charger further down the review.
The Good Stuff
The sheer convenience of the Ugreen Nexode 300W charger is really its best selling point. It is the sole charger I used for several trips throughout Malaysia, and the fact that I only need to carry this one product to charge up my various devices is incredibly convenient.
From my laptop, smartphone, smartwatch, to wireless earbuds, the Nexode 300W charger on its own is enough to fulfill my charging needs. The best part is, I’m not even sacrificing charging speeds with this GaN charger.
Take the latest 16-inch MacBook Pro with a range-topping M3 Max chip. The laptop can draw a maximum of 140W for fast charging, which this charger can (handily) provide. Of course, you do have to use the MacBook Pro’s provided MagSafe 3 to USB-C cable to take full advantage of this charging speed.
I also love the fact that the Nexode 300W charger has a dedicated power cable instead of having the charger itself plugged into an outlet. This makes it much easier to move the charger to a suitable spot on my desk, and the rubber feet – along with its heavy weight – keeps the charger in place securely.
When it comes to thermal performance, the Nexode 300W doesn’t get too hot even when I’m using all five ports of the charger for an extended period of time. Sure, it does get warm to the touch, but never did it get uncomfortably hot throughout my time with the charger. The efficiency of GaN technology is certainly evident here.
Speaking of which, the fact that the Nexode 300W is a GaN charger also helps with its portability. For a charger that’s capable of outputting 300W of power, it’s impressive just how compact it is. You’d be hard-pressed to find a non-GaN charger with the same power output in a similar form factor.
However, even though the Nexode 300W is quite compact, it’s not an entirely “portable” charger, which is a good segue to the next section.
The Bad Stuff
Tipping the scales at 839g, the Nexode 300W charger is not a lightweight product, so it’s not the most ideal charger to lug around in your backpack. That being said, I still don’t mind bringing it along on my travels, thanks to (again) its compact form factor. The fact that it doesn’t take up a lot of space more than make up for its heavy weight.
But as much as I enjoy the conveniences afforded by the Nexode 300W, RM699 for a charger is undoubtedly a lot of money, even if the price tag can be lowered during sales. After all, you can spend less to get, say, five separate chargers that can match the total power output of the Nexode 300W.
Of course, the caveat here is the fact that you don’t get the convenience of having all of that power output packaged in a single, compact (albeit heavy) charger.
Is It Worth It?
It comes down to individual preferences. If you want the sheer convenience of having a single five-port charger that can output 300W of power in a compact form factor, the Ugreen Nexode 300W GaN charger fits the bill. You just have to consider if this convenience is worth the premium price tag of the charger.
