Now this is interesting. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) just confirmed that both Proton and Perodua, our two national carmakers, will release their own EVs by 2025. Needless to say, the prospect of a Proton or Perodua EV – especially with affordability in mind – is certainly exciting.

This was revealed by the Deputy Minister of MITI, Liew Chin Tong. According to him, the government has discussed with Proton and Perodua to introduce a locally manufactured EV by 2025. However, he didn’t elaborate by what means this will be accomplished.

Given how closely Proton is working with Geely, the national carmaker can easily tap into the Chinese carmaker’s lineup of EV models to be locally assembled; that will fulfill the criteria of a CKD EV. As for Perodua, it did show us a glimpse of its electrified future with the Perodua EMO EV concept, which stands for Electric Motion Online.

Of course, it’s still much too early to speculate on how a Proton or Perodua EV would look like, though both companies certainly have the resources to make it happen. We will just have to wait until 2025 to see what the national carmakers have in store for us in the EV market.
