Apple’s spooky October event is live, and the first product – or rather, products – launched today is the new Apple M3 family chips. Made up of the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max, these are power-efficient 3nm chips that are touted as the “most advanced chips” for a personal computer.

It’s worth noting that the M3 chips are the first 3nm chips for a personal computer; a fact that the Cupertino company is highlighting quite a bit, and rightly so. This improves the overall power efficiency and performance of the chips, bringing a next-generation GPU with a faster CPU.

The M3 chips’ next-generation GPU is said to represent the “biggest leap forward in graphics architecture ever for Apple silicone.” It is faster – up to 2.5x faster than the M1 family of chips – more efficient, and it brings hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to Mac for the first time.

As for the CPU of the M3 chips, the performance and efficiency cores are now 30% and 50% faster (respectively) than M1 chips, and the M3’s Neural Engine is also 60% faster for improved machine learning performance. Unified memory support has been upgraded too: previously maxing out at 96GB, the M3 can now pack up to 128GB of memory.

Naturally, Apple also refreshed several Macs with the new M3 chips, including the MacBook Pro laptops and the all-in-one iMac. We reckon these chips will eventually make it to the iPad Pro as well, which could happen sometime in 2024 next year.
