Apple Watch Double Tap Gesture Now Available With watchOS 10.1
October 26, 2023 Andrew Cheng

First shown at Apple’s September event, the double tap gesture for the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 is now available through watchOS 10.1. The feature is enabled with the two smartwatches’ S9 SiP chip, so unfortunately, older Apple Watch models won’t support double tap.

Anyway, the double tap gesture on the Series 9 and Ultra 2 allows users to control the primary button in any given app with just a double tap of the index finger and thumb. Performing the gesture on the watch face, on the other hand, will open the Smart Stack, which can be scrolled through by doing the gesture again.

As mentioned, the S9 SiP chip powering the Series 9 and Ultra 2 is what enables the double tap gesture. It does so with the new 4-core Neural Engine that can perform machine learning tasks twice as fast over its predecessor. The Neural Engine “processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm” to recognise when a double tap gesture is performed.

If the double tap gesture piqued your interest, you can try it out for yourself with the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2; both of them are now available for purchase in Malaysia directly from Apple’s online store. We’ve also got an unboxing and hands-on of the Series 9 right here.
