The Proton S50, which is believed to be the national carmaker’s upcoming sedan based on the Geely Emgrand, is rumoured to be launching in Malaysia as early as November 2023. On top of that, four different variants are said to be offered, and all of them will be powered by the familiar 1.5L TGDi engine – the same one found under the hood of the X50 and X70.
These details on the S50 came from Funtasticko, citing an anonymous source. According to the source, the sedan will be offered in four trims: Executive, Premium, Flagship, and Flagship X. As mentioned, all models are said to feature a 1.5L TGDi engine that outputs 177PS and 255Nm of torque; it’s rumoured to be paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission too.

Previously, the S50 was speculated to be powered by a 1.5L NA engine with 114PS and 147 Nm of torque, which is the unit used by the Emgrand in China. But as Funtasticko’s source said, this engine option will only be available sometime in 2025; perhaps for a facelift update.
Nonetheless, until confirmed by Proton itself, take these rumoured details on the Proton S50 with a grain of salt. Then again, it’s worth noting that Funtasticko does have a pretty good track record with previous rumours that turned out to be true. We’ll just have to wait for Proton to release more details on the S50 – perhaps closer to the rumoured November 2023 launch.
