5 Highways to Use Open Payment System by September 2023 – MLFF Implementation by Q3 2024

A number of highways in Malaysia will begin to use an open payment system by September 2023. These include the New Pantai Expressway (NPE), Sungai Besi Expressway, Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (AKLEH), Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE), and the Penang Bridge.

This bit of info was revealed by Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi on Facebook. Once the open payment system is implemented, road users will be able to pay for tolls with their credit or debit cards. Basically, Touch ‘n Go will no longer be the only payment method on these highways.

Nanta elaborated that this is one of the first steps to transition to the Multi Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) system. A proof of concept will be done by October 2023, and MLFF will be fully implemented on all Malaysian highways by Q3 2024 next year.

MLFF is quite exciting, as it is a barrier-free tolling system to reduce traffic congestion. After all, there would be no toll booths anymore to slow down traffic. Hopefully, MLFF – and the open payment system – will be implemented according to the set timeline.
