Proton finally confirmed its plan to launch another SUV, though the national carmaker stopped short of announcing the official name of the upcoming model. We got a preview of the new SUV today at the line-off ceremony to mark the start of production, and it’s definitely based on the Geely Haoyue, so this should be the much anticipated “Proton X90.”

Unfortunately, members of the media were not allowed to take images of the new SUV, so we only have a glimpse of the car’s front end in the official shot below. Nonetheless, it is described as an MPV-like SUV, and the new model is set to be the national carmaker’s largest SUV yet.

It also comes with a mild hybrid system, which should be the same powertrain used by the Geely Okavango – that’s the name of the Haoyue in The Philippines – which combines a 1.5L three-cylinder turbo engine with a mild hybrid system. The powertrain puts out a combined figure of 190hp and 300Nm of torque.

To recap, the Haoyue is a large D-segment SUV that can be configured with five or seven seats; it measures 4,835mm long, 1,900mm wide, and 1,785 tall. Compared to the Proton X70, the Haoyue is 316mm longer, 69mm wider, and 91mm taller.

Of course, given its positioning as a premium SUV, the Haoyue is equipped with Geely’s level 2 autonomous driving system too, though it depends on Proton to implement this in its new SUV. It is made up of 24 different sensors to allow for as many as 17 “intelligent drive features.” According to Geely, this lets the SUV automatically follow, stop, as well as turn at speeds of up to 150km/h.

Just like the Proton X50, the Haoyue is also capable of parking itself. It features a 360-degree camera as well, and given the large size of the SUV, we imagine this will come in handy for most drivers.

According to Proton, its new SUV will be introduced “in the coming months” after a nationwide customer familiarisation tour. A media preview will also be held in the near future, so stay tuned for that!
