February 11, 2023 Andrew Cheng

Apple’s premium MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″ laptops are set to be available in Malaysia very, very soon. Now sporting the Cupertino company’s brand new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, the new machines promise faster performance, and in the case of the 16-inch MacBook Pro, the “longest battery life ever in a Mac.”

As usual, we were going through SIRIM’s database when we spotted the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with the model numbers A2779 and A2780 respectively. Both of them were registered with the certification body just yesterday on 10 February, so chances are, they will be available on our shores very soon.

Previously, Apple has revealed the retail prices of the two MacBooks for the Malaysian market. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is the more affordable model of the two with a RM8,799 starting price, while the larger, more powerful 16-inch MacBook Pro retails from RM10,799.

Thanks to the power efficiency of the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, the 16-inch MacBook Pro can last up to a whopping 22 hours on a single charge. In the performance side of things, the M2 Pro (with a 10- or 12-core CPU) offers up to 20% faster performance over the M1 Pro. As for the M2 Max, it promises 30% improvement in graphics performance compared to the M1 Max.

Beyond the new chips, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature some hardware revisions as well, including WiFi 6E for twice as fast connectivity compared to the previous generation. Aside from that, both laptops also get “advanced HDMI” now, which allows support for 8K displays for the first time.

To recap, the 14-inch MacBook Pro is set to retail from RM8,799 in Malaysia, while the larger 16-inch MacBook Pro starts at RM10,799. No word yet on the exact local availability of the two MacBooks, but now that they have been registered with SIRIM already, we reckon it will be available for purchase here very soon.
