Spy Shot: Proton S50 Spotted Again – Preve Replacement Launching in 2023?
December 29, 2022 Andrew Cheng

Not only is Proton testing the Proton X90 on Malaysian roads, the national carmaker is also hard at work with another model, the Proton S50 sedan. Based on the Geely Emgrand, the test mule has been spotted on local roads yet again.

These images were shared by The Ajerul and taken by one Fazrul Nazir. The S50 featured in these spy shots is the same test unit that’s been spotted before, judging by the trade plate. It looks to be a right-hand drive model as well, so local development of the sedan should have progressed quite a bit.

Widely speculated to be a replacement for the Proton Preve, the S50 is quite a sizeable car. The Emgrand, the model it’s said to be based on, measures 4,638mm long, 1,820mm wide, and 1,460mm tall. That makes it 95mm longer and 34mm wider than the Preve, assuming Proton retains the same dimensions.

Though the Emgrand is powered by a 1.5L NA engine (114PS/147 Nm) in China, it’s possible the sedan will feature a 1.5L TGDi engine instead for the Malaysian market. After all, Proton foreshadowed that two of its new models will feature the 1.5L turbocharged engine that offers up to 177PS and 255Nm of torque; that’s a respectable output.

Nonetheless, we reckon it’s still quite some time away before the Proton S50 is officially unveiled, though it’s rumoured to be launching as soon as 2023 next year. It’ll be interesting to see if it will be introduced after the Proton X90, which looks to be further in development right now.
