September 2, 2022 Andrew Cheng

Sony introduced a successor to its compact flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia 5 IV. Not only is it a pocketable smartphone, it’s also quite a bit more affordable than its larger sibling (Xperia 1 IV) while improving upon its predecessor.

First, let’s talk about the Malaysian availability of the Xperia 5 IV. According to Sony Malaysia, the compact flagship phone will be landing on our shores sometime in Q4 2022. With that in mind, it’s possible the device will be available here as soon as October next month.

Hardware wise, the Xperia 5 IV got a number of upgrades over last year’s model, though it’s not powered by the latest chipset. Instead, it features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, along with a larger 5,000mAh battery; that’s a 500mAh improvement over the Xperia 5 III.

Other specifications of the Xperia 5 IV include a 6.1-inch 1080p OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a triple camera system (12MP primary + 12MP ultra-wide angle + 12MP telephoto), a 12MP selfie camera, IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of expandable storage.

To recap, the Sony Xperia 5 IV will be coming to Malaysia sometime in Q4 2022. No word yet on how much it will cost on our shores, but for the sake of context, it goes for $999 (about RM4,480) in the US.
