Proton recently revealed a more specific launch timeline for the Smart #1 electric SUV in Malaysia. According to the national carmaker, the EV will makes its local debut in early Q4 2023. With that in mind, it’s possible the EV will be available here as early as October 2023.

Previously, Proton mentioned that there are no plans for local assembly of the Smart #1, so it should be full imported (CBU) to our market. Of course, with the incentives given by the Malaysian government right now – though it’s set to end on 31 December 2023 – the EV should be priced competitively.

In China, the Smart #1 retails from 181,600 Chinese yuan (about RM119,445) for the base Pure+ model. The Pro+ trim, on the other hand, goes for 196,600 yuan (approximately RM129,315). As for the range-topping Premium+ trim, it is priced at 226,600 yuan (around RM149,015).

Just like the European-bound model, the Smart #1 for China features a 200kW motor driving the rear wheels that outputs 272PS and 343Nm of torque. This allows the EV to go from 0-100kmph in only 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 180kmph.

Aside from that, the Smart #1 – according to the CLTC standard – has a range of up to 535km for the Pure+ and Pro+ models. The range of the Premium variant is slightly better at 560km, thanks to the use of silicon carbide (SiC) technology in the motor. The Premium trim also gets a more sophisticated driver assistance systems, along with larger 19-inch wheels.

To recap, the Smart #1 will be launched right here in Malaysia in early Q4 2023. Hopefully, the EV will be priced similarly to China on our shores, thanks to the incentives given by the government.
