Proton X50’s 1.5L TGDi Engine Will Power 2 More Upcoming Proton Models
July 6, 2022 Andrew Cheng

While Proton revealed a while ago that it will introduce “at least” three new models by 2024, details were light on these upcoming cars. Well, while we were visiting Proton Tanjung Malim’s new assembly line for the X50‘s 1.5L TGDi engine, the national carmaker revealed that two new Proton models will use the very same mill.

Unfortunately, Proton did not elaborate more, though we can make some educated guesses. One of the two Proton models that will get the 1.5L TGDi engine is likely the X90; the tentative name for the Geely Haoyue – or Okavango, as marketed in The Philippines – for the Malaysian market.

After all, the D-segment premium SUV has been spotted on Malaysian roads many times now with some changes here and there. In The Philippines, the Okavango is actually available with a 1.5L three-cylinder turbo engine and a mild hybrid system that put out a combined figure of 190hp and 300Nm of torque, though it remains to be seen if the X90 will get the hybrid system too.

The other model that will get the 1.5L turbo engine could very well be the “Proton S50” sedan, which is said to be a replacement for the Proton Preve. Believed to be based on the Geely Emgrand, this particular model has actually been spotted testing on Malaysian roads.

Based on Proton’s presentation, we’ll see the debut of these two models between 2023 to 2024. One other model not powered by the 1.5L TGDi engine is also expected to debut in the same timeframe, which is likely the Smart #1 EV. Proton Edar previous revealed the electric SUV will arrive here sometime next year.
