Wearing Mask Will Be Optional Outdoors From 1 May 2022 – Still Mandatory Indoors
April 27, 2022 Andrew Cheng

Effective 1 May 2022 this Sunday, wearing face mask will be optional outdoors in Malaysia. However, it is highly encouraged to do so, especially in crowded places and for high-risk individuals. If you’re indoors, well, it’s still mandatory to wear a face mask.

This was announced by Khairy Jamaluddin, the Minister of Health. Outdoor settings, as outlined by the government, include outside of a house or office building, bus stops, parks, and open-air walkways/bridges.

As for indoor settings, shopping malls, office buildings, public transports, and even classrooms are defined as such. However, in certain situations, you can remove your face mask indoors, including eating, exercising (alone), when giving a speech, or when performing on stage.

Do note that this new ruling will only be applicable from 1 May onwards this Sunday. Until then, make sure you have your face masks on when you’re outdoors. Stay safe!
