Proton just made a rather interesting announcement: the national carmaker has sold over 100,423 units of the exceedingly popular Proton X50 and Proton X70 locally. According to the carmaker, this is enough to make it the number one SUV brand in Malaysia.

This figure is taken from sales of the X50 and X70 between 12 December 2018 to 31 January 2022. Of course, given the impressive figure, both the X50 and X70 are the best-selling SUVs in their respective segments.

Unfortunately, Proton did not give an exact breakdown of the units sold, though it’s worth noting that more units of the X50 were sold last year. To be specific, as many as 28,774 units of the B-segment SUV were delivered in 2021, while the X70 found 16,375 homes in the same period.

The sheer value proposition of the Proton X50 and Proton X70 certainly helped in the success of these two SUVs. If the national carmaker can keep up the momentum, there’s a good chance it can meet its 150,000 sales target.
