PlayStation VR2 Details Revealed – 4K HDR, 120Hz OLED Display, Eye Tracking
January 5, 2022 Andrew Cheng

Sony just revealed more information on the PlayStation VR2 for the PS5. Yes, that’s the official name, and the controller for the virtual reality system is now called PS VR2 Sense. Combined with the headset’s new “sensory” features – and even eye tracking! – PS VR2 promises a more immersive gameplay experience.

The sensory features of the PS VR2 are highlighted quite a bit by Sony. The headset has a built-in motor with vibrations that is meant to amplify “the sensations of in-game actions from the player.” For example, you can feel a character’s elevated pulse during tense moments, or even the rush of objects passing close to the character’s head, as Sony puts it.

Another highlight of PS VR2 is its eye tracking capability. You can just look in a specific direction as an input method, so it’ll be interesting to see how developers will take advantage of this capability. Oh, you won’t even need an external camera for the PS VR2: there are cameras inside the VR headset itself for tracking. How cool is that?

Other specifications of the PS VR2 include support for 4K HDR, a display resolution of 2040 x 2000 per eye, an OLED panel with a 90/120Hz refresh rate, 110-degree field of view, and foveated rendering.

No release date or pictures of the PS VR2 system itself have been revealed, though Horizon Call of the Mountain (from Guerrilla and Firesprite) have been confirmed for the system. “This is only a taste of things to come, and I can’t wait to share more details with you about PS VR2,” said Hideaki Nishino, the SVP of platform experience at Sony.
