Perodua Sold 190,291 Vehicles in 2021 – YoY Sales Down by 29.8%
January 4, 2022 Andrew Cheng

Perodua is the latest carmaker to reveal its sales figures for 2021. In total, the national carmaker sold 190,291 vehicles last year; a 29.8% decrease in sales compared to 220,154 units sold in 2020.

Perodua attributes this drop in sales to COVID-19, chip shortage, and the recent floods. These three factors “adversely impacted production,” as the carmaker puts it. “The 190,291 registrations were below our target of 200,000 units for 2021 as the challenges in 2021 were greater than anticipated,” said the CEO and President of Perodua, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“Despite the lower than expected performance for 2021, our countermeasures for the impact of COVID-19 has proven successful so far as we and our suppliers are dynamically cooperating and coordinating our efforts to ensure interruptions are minimised,” he added.

Even though Perodua’s YoY sales are down in 2021, the Myvi continued to be the best-selling car in Malaysia last year with over 47,525 units sold. The Axia and Bezza are said to be leading their respective segments too: 43,080 units of the Axia were sold in 2021, while the Bezza saw 42,698 units registered in the same year.

“In December, we forecasted a 240,000 sales target for 2022. However, we will likely review that figure later this month (January) as we are taking into account the latest developments and events into consideration,” said Dato’ Zainal.

Nonetheless, with the extension of the sales tax exemption in Malaysia until 30 June 2022, we reckon Perodua’s sales – and other carmakers – will see encouraging growth in the first half of the year.
