Proton had an eventful year in 2021. With over 114,708 units sold, the national carmaker managed to sell 4.5% more vehicles last year compared to 2020 (109,716 units). As for Proton’s best-selling model, it is none other than the Proton Saga with a respectable 42,267 units sold.

Right behind the Saga in terms of sales volume in 2021 is the exceedingly popular Proton X50 with 28,774 units sold, making it the best-selling SUV in Malaysia. Given its asking price, the fact that the X50 is Proton’s second best-selling model is really quite impressive.

In third position is the X70 with 16,375 units registered last year; this is enough to make it the third best-selling SUV in Malaysia, though it is still (naturally) leading the C-segment SUV market. In fourth place is the Persona (16,153 units), followed by the Iriz (6,708 units) and Exora (4,035 units).

“2021 was tough for the automotive industry as a whole and this is reflected in the reduction in TIV compared to the previous year. From a global chip shortage to a spike in COVID-19 numbers that lead to another lockdown to skyrocketing transport costs, there were many challenges for industry players to overcome,” said the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah.

“That is why Proton’s sales growth in a year where the market contracted is significant as it is the result of careful planning and juggling of available resources,” he added.
