Now this is quite interesting. The CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah, just revealed that Proton has plans to introduce EV, plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV), and hybrid cars in the future. However, no specific timeline was given, unfortunately enough.

This was revealed in an interview between Roslan and The Star. Speaking on the tax incentives for EVs tabled in Budget 2022, he said it will help to drive the adoption rate of EVs in Malaysia, as well as encouraging the introduction of more EVs in the local market.

“Proton has a planned roadmap towards introducing hybrid, plug-in hybrid vehicles, and EVs – so perhaps this development can help to push our plans forward,” he said.

However, Roslan added that the EV sector in Malaysia still has a long way to go. “The building of a charging infrastructure to help support larger numbers of EVs is a considerable obstacle that needs to be overcome.”

Nonetheless, the prospect of a Proton EV, PHEV, or hybrid is certainly an interesting proposition. Thanks to its partnership with Geely, the national carmaker certainly has the ability to produce such vehicles – here’s hoping it will be sooner rather than later.
