The Sony Xperia Pro-I Is a $1,800 Smartphone/Camera With the RX100 VII’s Sensor
October 26, 2021 Andrew Cheng

Sony just unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia Pro-I. What makes this phone particularly interesting is its 12MP primary camera: packed with a 1.0-type Exmor RS sensor, it is based on the sensor found in Sony’s well-loved RX100 VII camera.

Because of this, Sony is not just positioning the Xperia Pro-I as a smartphone: it’s also touted as “an exciting addition to Sony’s camera line-up” by the company. Anyway, the phone/camera’s 12MP primary sensor promises “professional imaging quality,” though we’ll have to put this to the test to find out for ourselves.

Beyond the new 12MP sensor, the Xperia Pro-I is…basically based on the Xperia 1 III, though it doesn’t get the variable telephoto lens. Instead, it features a 12MP telephoto lens with a 50mm focal length and a 12MP ultra-wide angle shooter.

Other specifications of the Xperia Pro-I include a sharp and vibrant 120Hz 6.5-inch 4K OLED screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset paired with 12GB of RAM, 512GB of expandable storage, an 8MP selfie camera, a 4,500mAh battery, and an IP65/IP68 rating.

Given the sophisticated primary camera of the Sony Xperia Pro-I, it carries a hefty price tag too: in the US, this flagship phone retails at a steep $1,800 (about RM7,465). Sony Malaysia confirmed that the Xperia Pro-I will be launched here soon, and you can register your interest for the flagship phone right here.
