Now this is interesting: Porsche just confirmed that it will be setting up local assembly (CKD) here in Malaysia from 2022 onwards. CKD models are not taxed as heavily as fully imported (CBU) cars in Malaysia, so there’s a good chance locally assembled Porsche models will be more affordable in our market.

Porsche’s CKD operations in Malaysia is set up together with its long-standing partner Sime Darby Berhad; the latter is naturally the official distributor of Porsche models in the country. “The site will be responsible for the final assembly of specific models for the local market from 2022 onwards,” Porsche said in a press release.

The carmaker added that the facility will operate alongside Porsche’s established European network of production sites. It remains to be seen exactly which Porsche model will be locally assembled first, though the company did say that these vehicles “will specifically match local requirements and will be available for Malaysia only.”

“Malaysia and the whole ASEAN is a region of great potential and we look forward to the first locally assembled models reaching our Malaysian customers next year,” said Detlev von Platen, member of the executive board for sales and marketing at Porsche.
