Ultra-wide angle cameras on smartphones allows users to fit more into a picture, but more often than not, they have a fixed focus. Well, the upcoming iPhone 13 Pro will change this up: the ultra-wide angle lens for the 2021 iPhone will supposedly have an autofocus system.

In a 9to5Mac report, which quoted renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, at least the iPhone 13 Pro will have an ultra-wide angle camera with autofocus. Unfortunately, this feature is said to be reserved for the Pro models only. The standard 2021 iPhones won’t get it, though Kuo added that it could be a standard feature for 2022 models.

If this turns out to be accurate, it won’t be the first time it’s done on a smartphone. Take the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: its 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle camera even comes with Dual Pixel autofocus, which is quite a bit faster than regular phase detection autofocus.

On top of that, the fact that the S21 Ultra’s…ultra-wide angle sensor has autofocus also lets it take very detailed macro shots. It remains to be seen if Apple has the same implementation planned for the iPhone 13 Pro, though it’s certainly a possibility to take full advantage of the autofocus system in the ultra-wide angle camera.

No word yet on when Apple will officially introduce its 2021 iPhone lineup, but if past launches are anything to go by, it should be happening sometime in September or October.
