1,899 Proton X50 Delivered in May 2021; Launch of New Proton Models Pushed Back

Proton just released its sales figures for the month of May 2021, and given the implementation of the third Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia last month, it’s not quite as encouraging as prior months. The Proton X50, for one, were only delivered to 1,899 customers last month.

In comparison, as many as 3,583 bookings of the X50 were fulfilled in April 2021. But with 1,899 units delivered last month, the X50 is still leading the B-segment SUV market. To date, as many as 17,136 units of the SUV are now on the road.

Aside from the X50, three other Proton models led their respective segments in May 2021. These include the Proton X70 (1,523 units), Proton Saga (3,786 units), and Proton Exora (399 units). The Persona, on the other hand, is the third best-selling B-segment sedan (1,303 units), while the Iriz sits at the fourth spot in its segment with 526 units sold.

According to Proton, the implementation of the total lockdown in Malaysia is also pushing back the launch of its new models. Though the carmaker did not specify any of them, we believe they are the facelifted Persona, Iriz, as well as the special edition X70.

Despite the current circumstances, Proton “remains committed to meeting our launch targets and creating some excitement for our customers in 2021,” said the CEO of Proton Edar, Roslan Abdullah.

At the moment, Proton is halting sales and production of its models until the first phase of the total lockdown is lifted on 14 June, though there’s a chance this will be extended. Nonetheless, at least the sales tax exemption for cars has also been extended to 31 December 2021, so buyers can still enjoy lower prices until then.
