Proton X70 Facelift Launching in August 2021? Possibly With 1.5L Turbo Engine
April 28, 2021 Andrew Cheng

The Proton X70 has been in the Malaysian market for quite some time now. Initially launched here back in 2018 in CBU form, the C-segment SUV was later locally assembled (CKD) from 2020 onwards. Well, if a new report is to be believed, the X70 may be facelifted in August this year.

This bit of news comes from local automotive site Automachi, which said that the facelifted X70 will makes its local debut sometime in August 2021. On top of that, Automachi also said that the X70’s 1.8L turbocharged engine will be replaced with a 1.5L three-cylinder turbo mill for the facelift model.

Chances are, this would be the same 1.5L TGDi three-cylinder engine that’s found under the hood of the Proton X50, which outputs 177PS and 255Nm of torque. Of course, that’s assuming this report turns out to be true. Given that August 2021 is about four months away, it’s a little bit early to tell.

Other than the new engine, the facelifted X70 will supposedly soldier on with the same seven-speed dual-clutch transmission found in the current model. There will be some exterior changes as well, and it will be interesting to see if Proton will take some styling cues from the Geely Boyue Pro. After all, the X70 is based on the Geely Boyue.

If Proton really is working on a facelift for the Proton X70, the national carmaker is keeping itself busy. It’s worth noting that the Persona and Iriz are set to be facelifted sometime this year as well. Nonetheless, we’ll keep a close eye on the local development of these upcoming Proton models.
