Production of Proton X50 Will Increase, But Not Immediately
April 27, 2021 Andrew Cheng

The Proton X50 is, without a doubt, one of the most hyped B-segment SUVs in the market now. In fact, in a statement sent out to Paultan.org, Proton said that it has “literally been playing ‘catch-up’ since day one” because of the huge number of bookings. Well, the good news is, production volume of the SUV will be increased, though it’s not happening overnight.

“Our production volume is not limited by plant capacity. We want to and will gradually build up the volume (of the X50), but it can’t be done immediately. It takes a considerable amount of lead time to increase production capacity and we are working with our vendors and suppliers to source enough parts to do just that,” said a Proton spokesperson to Paultan.org.

Proton added that the various Movement Control Orders (MCO) and shutdowns caused by COVID-19 clusters further delayed the initial production of the X50. Of course, these are also affecting how quickly the national carmaker can increase production numbers of the SUV.

That being said, it’s worth noting that Proton still managed to deliver over 3,513 units of the X50 last month, and the carmaker said that this is already “above the initial planned capacity.” Chances are, the number of units delivered this month would be in the same range too – or perhaps even higher, if things go to plan.

As of March 2021 last month, Proton has delivered 11,654 units of the Proton X50. But with over 40,000 bookings already placed for the B-segment SUV, the national carmaker certainly has some ways to go still – waiting period of the X50 currently stands at over six months.
