This is our very first look at the next generation VR controller for the PlayStation 5 system. Sporting a unique “orb” design, the new VR controller is also equipped with adaptive triggers and haptic feedback – two key hardware found in the PS5’s DualSense controller.
The design of the PS5’s VR controller is really one of its most eye-catching features. According to PlayStation, the unique orb-like shape of the controller allows gamers to hold it naturally. On top of that, it’s also said to be well-balanced and comfortable to hold. It is “an iconic design that will change how VR games are played,” as PlayStation puts it.
Aside from that, the new VR controller also features the DualSense’s adaptive triggers and haptic feedback for an even more immersive gameplay experience. Interestingly, the next gen VR controller also has finger touch detection; it can “detect your fingers (without pressing any button) in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers.”
In retrospect, this new VR controller for the PS5 is the first “proper” controller made for PlayStation’s VR system, which is really quite exciting. After all, the original PlayStation VR system for the PS4 (released in 2016) used the company’s Move controller, which was released way back in 2010.
There’s no release date yet for the Playstation 5’s VR system, though Sony did say that it will not be launched in 2021. Nonetheless, it’s shaping up to be quite a promising next generation VR system.
