Proton just introduced a slew of special edition models, including the Proton Saga R3 and Proton Iriz R3. Despite the fact that these two models carry the national carmaker’s R3 branding, there are no performance upgrades here. Rather, the changes are mostly cosmetic.
The Saga R3 Limited Edition, for one, is almost identical to the Proton Saga Anniversary Edition in terms of styling. It sports the same black and yellow colour scheme, though with R3-inspired design elements this time around. Yellow highlights are found across the side skirts, lower bumpers, side mirror caps, and of course, even the grille garnish.
On the inside, the Saga R3 sports the same black and yellow colour scheme. Streaks of yellow are applied to the centre console, air-conditioning vents, instrument cluster, and even the leatherette seats. Beyond these changes, the Saga R3 is identical to the regular Premium model, so it still comes with a 1.3L engine that outputs 95PS and 120Nm of torque paired with a four-speed automatic gearbox.
As for the Iriz R3 – which is also based on the Premium trim – it gets similar styling cues as the Saga R3, though it does feature larger 16-inch alloy wheels finished in dark grey. Unique to the Iriz R3 is also a rear spoiler with the carmaker’s R3 branding for a more aggressive, sporty look.
Beyond that, the Iriz R3 soldiers on with the same 1.6L DOHC engine with 109PS and 150Nm of torque; drive is sent to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT). If you’re wondering, no, this special edition Iriz is not based on the facelifted model, which is expected to only arrive later this year.
Given that the Proton Saga R3 and Iriz R3 are limited edition models, very little units are available. The Iriz R3, for one, is limited to only 500 units, though the Saga R3 is more widely available with 2,000 units offered. Anyway, the Iriz R3 retails at RM53,700, while the Saga R3 goes for RM42,800.
Of course, now that the government’s sales tax exemption for CKD and CBU cars have been extended to 30 June 2021, The Iriz R3 and Saga R3 can actually be purchased for RM52,900 and RM42,300 respectively. But given that not a lot of units are available for these two models, we expect them to be sold out very quickly.
