More and more laptops with AMD’s excellent Ryzen 4000 processors are arriving in Malaysia, and the latest one is a convertible notebook from Lenovo. This is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5, and not only is it powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen 4000 chips, it is also pre-installed with Microsoft Office Home & Student 2019.
With the inclusion of the software, the IdeaPad Flex 5 will have lifetime access to the full version of Office applications like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This makes it ideal for folks that are planning to get Microsoft Office anyway, and it’s worth noting that not many laptops offer full access to the software for free.
As for the IdeaPad Flex 5 itself, we first spotted it on Shopee from renowned local retailer EIT Store. Looking at the shop’s listings, it is offering the laptop from only RM2,259 – the original retail price is RM2,399 – for the Ryzen 3 4300U model, which is also equipped with 4GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage.
If you want more processing power, you can opt for the higher-end IdeaPad Flex 5 with a faster Ryzen 5 4500U processor and a more generous 8GB RAM for RM2,929. Unfortunately, the SSD capacity remains the same at 256GB. Still, it’s decent list of hardware, though it would’ve been great if it offered more storage.
After all, its competition, such as the Acer Swift 3, offers similar hardware with a much more generous 512GB SSD. Granted, the Swift 3 is not a convertible laptop like the IdeaPad Flex 5.
Curiously, on Lenovo Malaysia’s online store, the IdeaPad Flex 5 is listed with a different configuration. Not only does it feature a faster Ryzen 7 4700U processor paired with 16GB of RAM, it also comes with a 14-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS display; the model offered by EIT Store – and other retail outlets as well – has a less desirable TN panel instead.
While the configuration of the IdeaPad Flex 5 on Lenovo’s online store looks more appealing, do note that it is equipped with a 1TB HDD instead of a faster SSD storage. Besides that, it doesn’t seem to be bundled with Microsoft Office Home & Student as well. And to top it off, with a RM3,949 price tag (before discounts, at the time of writing), it’s quite a bit more costly too.
The lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is now available in Malaysia. To recap, the Ryzen 3 4300U model can be purchased for RM2,259 from EIT, while the higher-end Ryzen 5 4500U option costs RM2,929 from the same retailer. Alternatively, you can also get it from Lenovo’s online store for the faster Ryzen 7 4700U variant, though you’ll have to fork out RM3,949.
Update 27 July: Lenovo Malaysia amended the pricing of the IdeaPad Flex 5 on its online store. The article has been updated to reflect this.
