It’s generally agreed that Xiaomi’s range of wearables are very popular, thanks to its affordable pricing and feature set. If you’re looking to pick one up, you’ll be happy to know that the Chinese company’s latest fitness band, the Xiaomi Mi Band 5, is set to be unveiled globally next week.

Xiaomi Malaysia sent out an invitation for its ecosystem product launch happening on 15 July. Looking at the teaser image, there’s a very good chance the company is set to introduce the new Mi Band 5 on our shores, alongside a number of other products.

Of course, just to be sure if Xiaomi really is introducing the Mi Band 5 in Malaysia, we looked through SIRIM’s database to see if the fitness band has been registered with the certification body. True enough, it’s registered under Rainbow Distribution with the model number XMSH10HM just yesterday, so we’re pretty confident the wearable will go on sale here very soon.

Compared to its predecessor, the Mi Band 5 isn’t remarkably different, but it does bring some neat improvements. Its AMOLED display, for one, now measures 1.1-inch with a 294 x 126 resolution. The Mi Band 4, on the other hand, had a smaller 0.95-inch 240 x 120 AMOLED screen.

Besides that, it is far easier to charge the Mi Band 5 now. Previously, users had to completely remove the device itself from the strap to place it into the charger, but that’s no longer necessary with the Mi Band 5. There are now two contact points beneath the heart rate sensor for a magnetic charger to connect to, which makes for a much more seamless charging experience.

Speaking of which, the Mi Band 5’s PPG heart rate sensor is said to be 50% more accurate now, and it can even warn users of any abnormality with their heart rate. The wearable’s sleep monitoring capability has been improved as well – by 40%, supposedly – with the added ability to measure REM sleep and even short naps.

The Xiaomi Mi Band 5 will be launched globally next week on 15 July. It remains to be seen exactly when it will arrive in Malaysia, or even how much it will cost locally, though we reckon it wouldn’t go past the RM200 mark. For the sake of comparison, the Mi Band 5 retails from only 189 Chinese yuan in China – that comes up to about RM115.
