Proton X70 Remains Best-Selling C-Segment SUV in Malaysia; 1,909 Units Sold in June 2020
July 2, 2020 Andrew Cheng

Proton just released its sales report for the month of June 2020, and it’s looking pretty good for the national carmaker. With 9,623 units sold last month, it is Proton’s second best sales month in 2020. To top it off, this June sales figure is actually a 26.3% increase over the company’s sales performance in the same month last year.

Evidently, Proton’s sales are recovering quite well amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The carmaker attributes this encouraging sales number to the sales tax exemption and the Proton Saga: 4,447 units of the A-segment sedan were sold last month, which is the best sales performance for the car in 70 months. This eclipses the previous top sales figure of the Saga back in October 2019, where 4,275 units were sold.

Besides the Saga, the Proton X70 maintains its position as the best-selling C-segment SUV in June with 1,909 units sold. In fact, it’s the top selling SUV in its segment for the first half of 2020. In our opinion, the X70 is by far the best SUV you can get while the 100% sales tax exemption is in effect in Malaysia; it’s discounted up to RM7,000 right now.

Anyway, while the company didn’t reveal the exact sales figure for the Proton Persona, it remains at the top of the B-segment sedan in the local market. Same goes for the Proton Exora in the C-segment MPV category, while the Proton Iriz sits at the third place in its segment last month.

With the 100% sales tax exemption on locally assembled cars in full effect here in Malaysia, we expect Proton’s sales – and other carmakers, really – to grow even further this month. With the imminent arrival of the Proton X50 later this year, things are looking up for the national carmaker.
