Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Launched in Malaysia; Starts at RM4,499
June 29, 2020 Andrew Cheng

The highly anticipated Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 has just been launched in Malaysia, and quite a number of configurations are offered here. In fact, the most affordable variant retails at only RM4,499 – that’s quite a good price tag for a premium gaming laptop.

Of course, the hardware offered at that price point aren’t particularly impressive, but it will be sufficient for more casual gamers. We’d argue it’s even ideal for those who want to use the Zephyrus G14 primarily for non-gaming tasks; it has all the qualities of a good productivity laptop, esepcially in terms of battery life.

For easy reference, here’s the full price breakdown of all Zephyrus G14 configurations available in Malaysia:

  • Ryzen 5 4600HS, GTX 1650, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD – RM4,499
  • Ryzen 5 4600HS, GTX 1650 Ti, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD – RM5,299
  • Ryzen 7 4800HS, GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD – RM6,199
  • Ryzen 9 4900HS, RTX 2060 Max-Q, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD – RM7,699

It’s worth noting that all variants of the Zephyrus G14 come with a 14-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate, but with one exception: the range-topping RTX 2060 Max-Q variant with a Ryzen 9 4900HS processor. This particular configuration is also available with a 2560 x 1440 screen, but the refresh rate is limited to only 60Hz.

If you want the best gaming experience, it’s best to go for the 1080p display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Sure, a higher resolution panel is nice to have, but a fast screen is especially important for a gaming laptop. Plus, regardless of which screen option you go for, both are Pantone Validated panels with 100% sRGB colour coverage, and there is no price difference either.

Besides that, all configurations of the Zephyrus G14 comes with the unique AniMe Matrix LED panel on the top lid…except for the most affordable GTX 1650 variant. This explains the rather big RM800 price difference between the base model and the GTX 1650 Ti option; it’s not just the GPU that’s different.

Those who want the best value for their money should opt for the GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q variant. This configuration of the Zephyrus G14 may not come with the most powerful GPU or CPU combination, but it will offer comparable gaming performance as the highest-end RTX 2060 Max-Q model.

See, in terms of raw power, the performance gap between the two GPUs are not very big. Of course, you won’t get RTX-specific features with the GTX 1660 Ti graphics card, but this may not matter to some folks.

While the full local pricing of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 has been revealed, only the highest-end RTX 2060 Max-Q variant – with a QHD screen – and the GTX 1650 Ti model can be purchased right now in Malaysia. The GTX 1650 and GTX 1660 Ti configurations will land here sometime in August, while the range-topping RTX 2060 Max-Q variant with a 1080p 120Hz screen will be available in September 2020.
