Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 Lands in Malaysia 29 June; Goes up to RM7,699
June 21, 2020 Andrew Cheng

Asus just confirmed that the highly anticipated Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop will be arriving here in Malaysia on 29 June. On top of that, we also got details on one of the many variants that will be introduced here; it even comes with the “AniMe Matrix” panel on the top lid.

That’s right, Asus Malaysia will be offering the AniMe Matrix model of the Zephyrus G14 on our shores. In fact, our review unit sports this feature, and it’s really quite fun to experiment with. Granted, it’s not a super practical hardware – it also makes the laptop slightly thicker and heavier – but it is very eye-catching.

Anyway, the Zephyrus G14 we received for review is a Malaysian unit, and it’s one of the highest-end variants with some powerful hardware under the hood. For one, it features AMD’s new Ryzen 9 4900HS processor. Not only is it more power-efficient than its competition (thanks to its 7nm size), it’s also a very fast chip.

Besides that, this configuration of the Zephyrus G14 comes with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU too. Given that this is the Max-Q design of the RTX 2060, expect it to be slightly slower than the regular graphics card. Nonetheless, it is still quite a capable GPU, and we’ll put it through its paces very soon.

In the screen department, this high-end model is equipped with a 14-inch 2560 x 1440 IPS screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, it seems like the Full HD 120Hz display will not be offered in this configuration, which is quite odd for a gaming laptop. It remains to be seen if the high refresh rate panel will be offered with other variants of the Zephyrus G14 for the Malaysian market, though we certainly hope so.

Other specifications of the Zephyrus G14 we got for review include 16GB of DDR4 3200MHz RAM, a generous 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, a 76WHr battery that promises up to 10 hours of battery life – we think this is achievable with the power efficiency of the Ryzen 4000 series processor – and a 19.9mm thick chassis that tips the scales at 1.7kg.

Given the high-end hardware under the hood, it’s no surprise that this variant of the gaming laptop retails at RM7,699. Yes, it’s quite a steep price tag, especially for an RTX 2060 Max-Q machine.

Then again, value for money isn’t the main appeal of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14: it’s the compact, slim, and lightweight 14-inch form factor of the gaming laptop that is the main selling point here. These features do not come cheap, but Asus will reveal more affordable variants of the G14 for the Malaysian market come 29 June.
