PlayStation 5 Launch Games Will Be Unveiled on 12 June; Some May Be Exclusives
June 9, 2020 Andrew Cheng

This was revealed in a leak last night, but Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has finally confirmed it: games that are coming to the PlayStation 5 will be revealed later this week on 12 June. On top of that, some of the upcoming titles may be exclusive to the next-generation console.

In an interview with Gameindustry.biz, the CEO and President of SIE, Jim Ryan, said that there will be games that are only playable on the PS5. “It is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5,” he was quoted as saying.

Of course, it remains to be seen if the launch games PlayStation is revealing this Friday morning will be exclusive to the PS5 system, but it’s certainly a possibility. According to the company, the 12 June online event will be about an hour long, so we can expect to see a good number of games showcased on that day.

In the updated announcement post on PlayStation Blog, Ryan also said that “the games coming to PS5 represent the best in the industry from innovative studios that span the globe. Studios, both larger and smaller, those newer and those more established, all have been hard at work developing games that will showcase the potential of the hardware.”

It’s worth noting that the launch game reveal is a part of a series of PS5 updates moving forward. “Rest assured, after next week’s showcase, we will still have much to share with you,” Ryan added.

If you’re hoping the PS5 event next week will also give us a glimpse at the actual design of the console, it’s not likely to happen. Naturally, the exact pricing and availability of the next-generation console are even more unlikely to be revealed then. Nonetheless, the PS5 will be hitting the market by the end of the year; this much is confirmed.

It’ll be interesting to see just how upcoming games for the PS5 will take advantage of the console’s raw power. Not only does it have a beefy CPU, GPU, and a blazing fast SSD, the new DualSense controller for the next-gen system is another tool for developers to further enhance immersion. After all, the adaptive triggers and improved haptic feedback of the controller are some of the most exciting innovations we’ve seen thus far.

The PlayStation 5 event will be happening this Friday on 12 June at 4AM Malaysian time. You can catch the online event on YouTube, Twitch, a well as the official PS5 website.

Update 9 June: This article has been updated with the new timing for the PlayStation 5 event. Previously, it was set to take place on 5 June.
