Apple Unveils New 13″ MacBook Pro With Magic Keyboard; Now Starts at RM5,599

This is earlier than expected: Apple just updated its 13-inch MacBook Pro. Now featuring the Cupertino company’s new Magic Keyboard and Intel’s 10th generation processors, the refreshed MacBook Pro is better than ever. Of course, that also means there’s a slight price increase, though you do get more for your money now.

Previously, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with two USB-C ports (complete with Thunderbolt 3 support) retails from RM5,499. While that’s lower than the current starting price, that model only shipped with 128GB of SSD storage and 8GB of RAM. The updated base model we have now, on the other hand, costs RM5,599, but it offers twice the amount of SSD storage at 256GB; that’s a much more practical capacity.

Of course, on top of that, the refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro is also equipped with the new Magic Keyboard, which should be more durable than the previous butterfly keyboard. The typing experience is markedly better too, offering longer key travel and more pronounced tactile feedback. Basically, it will feel more like a traditional laptop keyboard.

Besides that, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with Intel’s latest 10th generation processors as well, but this is limited to the higher-end model with four USB-C ports. Currently, only the variant with a quad-core Core i5 processor has its prices revealed on Apple’s Malaysian website; it remains to be seen just how much the faster Core i7 option will cost locally.

Aside from the new processor and Magic Keyboard, the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro is similar to its predecessor. It still comes with a 13.3‑inch 2560 x 1600 IPS display with True Tone technology, support for P3 wide colour gamut, and up to 500 nits of brightness. All in all, it’s the same screen people know and love, though it would’ve been great if the bezels surrounding the display were reduced too.

Besides that, all variants of the 13-inch MacBook Pro remain equipped with the Touch Bar, for better or worse. The Touch ID fingerprint sensor is also present, along with a physical Esc key now. Other specifications of this laptop include up to 32GB of LPDDR4X 3733MHz RAM and a whopping 4TB SSD storage, as well as Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 or Iris Plus Graphics integrated GPU.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro retails from RM5,599 for the base model with an 8th generation Core i5 chip, 256GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM. It goes all the way up to RM8,799 for the 10th generation Core i5 option with 16GB of RAM and a generous 1TB SSD. Although the local pricing of the new MacBook Pro has been revealed, it’s not known yet exactly when it will be available for purchase in Malaysia.
