Great news: Sony Interactive Entertainment just confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will be released on 19 June 2020. Previously slated for a 29 May release, the highly anticipated game from Naughty Dog was delayed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, the actual delay isn’t as long as some had though.
That being said, the new release date for The Last of Us Part II does mean another PlayStation 4 exclusive will be delayed: Ghost of Tsushima. Originally set for a 26 June release, Sucker Punch’s new game since Infamous Second Son (which was released back in 2014) will arrive on 17 July 2020 now. Not too long of a wait from the initial release date.
Regardless, it’s great that these two exclusive games for the PlayStation 4 platform are still releasing within a month of their original launch dates. However, it’s worth noting that this is actually the third release date for The Last of Us Part II.
After all, the game was planned to be released as early as 21 February. According to Naughty Dog, the game had to delayed to May (at the time) to make more time for the final polishing process of the game. This is done instead of compromising parts of the game, which is a good step in our opinion.
The announcement of the new release date for The Last of Us Part II comes after a leak of the game, which supposedly contains major spoilers for the story. “It’s disappointing to see the release and sharing of pre-release footage from development,” Naughty Dog said on Twitter. “Do your best to avoid spoilers and we ask that you don’t spoil it for others,” the studio added.
Needless to say, we will not be linking any coverage of the leak to avoid any form of spoiler. Personally, we’re also doing our best to avoid spoiling the story for ourselves. Given that it’s been seven long years since The Last of Us was released, it would’ve been disheartening to get the story spoiled merely months before the sequel is released later in June 2020.
To recap, The Last of Us Part II will be released exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on 19 June. Ghost of Tsushima, on the other hand, will be coming the following month on 17 July. At the moment, only the latter is available for pre-order on the PlayStation Store; The Last of Us Part II was previously removed from the store when it was delayed indefinitely. We expect the game to be listed again very soon.
