Xiaomi just added a new device to the Mi 10 series in China, the Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G. At a glance, it looks very similar to the Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite 5G. In fact, it appears both smartphones share the same chassis, but the former does come with a more sophisticated camera system that can even do 50x zoom.

This is evident with the branding on the rear camera module of both smartphones. On the Mi 10 Lite, the 48MP primary sensor is highlighted, but the Mi 10 Youth Edition focuses on the 50x zooming capability instead. Granted, the Mi 10 Lite’s full camera hardware has not been revealed yet, so it’s not quite as clear-cut that these two camera systems are different.

But looking closer at the four camera modules of the Mi 10 Youth Edition, it’s clear that the sensor on the bottom right of the camera module is a periscope-style telephoto lens. The Mi 10 Lite, on the other hand, does not have a similar sensor on the same location, so we believe these two devices are different from each other.

Anyway, let’s talk about the quad camera configuration of the Mi 10 Youth Edition. The primary sensor is a 48MP f/1.79 unit, which is complemented by the aforementioned 8MP periscope telephoto lens that can do 5x optical or 50x digital zoom. The other two sensors are an 8MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle shooter and a macro lens.

Beyond the camera system, the Mi 10 Youth Edition shares most of the Mi 10 Lite’s hardware. It has a 6.57-inch 2400 x 1080 AMOLED notched display with a 180Hz touch sampling rate, which is not to be confused with a screen’s refresh rate. The 180Hz sampling rate improves the responsiveness of the display to touch inputs, reducing input lag.

Powering the Mi 10 Youth Edition, on the other hand, is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset, giving the phone 5G connectivity and a good level of performance. Other specifications of this phone include 6GB or 8GB of RAM, three storage options (64GB, 128GB, and 256GB), a 16MP selfie camera, a 4,160mAh battery, as well an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth Edition 5G will be sold in China from 30 April onwards in four distinct variants:

• 64GB + 6GB: 2,099 yuan (~RM1,290)
• 128GB + 6GB: 2,299 yuan (~RM1,415)
• 128GB + 8GB: 2,499 yuan (~RM1,535)
• 256GB + 8GB: 2,799 yuan (~RM1,720)

At the moment, it remains to be seen if the Mi 10 Youth Edition will be made available outside of China. If it does, it’ll be interesting to see if Malaysia will receive this particular model or the Mi 10 Lite 5G, given the similarities between the two smartphones.
