This Could Have Been the Google Pixel 4a XL With Dual Camera
April 11, 2020 Andrew Cheng

Yesterday, we reported that only one variant of the Google Pixel 4a will be released, thanks to a leak by 9to5Google. Well, it seems like during the development of the upcoming mid-range phone, Google mulled the idea of a Pixel 4a XL, and get this: it had a dual camera system.

This is based on an eBay listing of what is claimed to be the back panel of the Pixel 4a XL. While it looks strikingly similar to the Pixel 4 XL, the addition of a cutout for the rear fingerprint sensor puts it more in line with the leaked design of the Pixel 4a.

But as mentioned, what makes this alleged Pixel 4a XL so intriguing is the camera module, which appears to be able to house two camera sensors. Chances are, Google considered to use the Pixel 4’s dual camera system with the Pixel 4a XL – if this back panel is indeed made for the latter.

If Google had decided to proceed with the Pixel 4a XL, the dual camera system would’ve been an interesting hardware to differentiate the XL model from the regular one. Alas, with 9to5Google’s report that Google will only introduce the smaller Pixel 4a – and the site does have a good track record – the XL model will remain a prototype.

Nonetheless, the Pixel 4a itself does look like a promising mid-range smartphone, even if it’s said to only offer a singular 12.2MP camera on the back. Unlike the Pixel 4 smartphones, which had large top bezels, the more affordable 4a model will likely sport a much sleeker hole-punch cutout on the top left of the screen. The cutout supposedly houses an 8MP f/2.0 selfie camera.

As for the display itself, the Pixel 4a is believed to feature a 5.81-inch 2340 x 1080 OLED panel. It’s worth noting that this screen size is slightly larger than the Pixel 3a’s 5.6-inch panel, and a bit smaller than the 3a XL’s 6-inch display. It’s a good screen size that’s neither too big nor too small.

Other leaked specifications of the Pixel 4a include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset paired with 6GB of RAM, 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, a 3,080mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging, a rear fingerprint sensor, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There’s no release date yet for the Google Pixel 4a, but given that its retail packaging has been leaked, it may be introduced very soon. The mid-range smartphone is expected to retail from $399, which comes up to about RM1,720.
