It’s been quite some time since Huawei has a new entry in DxOMark’s mobile camera ranking, but the Chinese phone maker is back with the Huawei P40 Pro. Once again, it is back at the top of the ranking: the Pro got an impressive total score of 128.

According to DxOMark, the P40 Pro’s Leica-branded quad camera system offers wide dynamic range, fast and accurate autofocus, excellent texture to noise balance, and good detail across the zoom range. On top of that, the site also mention that the Pro is the “best device for recording video.”

DxOMark further elaborate that “if you want the best camera in a smartphone, there is currently no better alternative.” Evidently, the P40 Pro impresses quite a bit.

However, the phone’s quad camera configuration also has a number of shortcomings. As DxOMark points out, the P40 Pro has a tendency to slightly underexposure in bright light conditions, and it has some issues getting the white balance right both in stills and video recordings. But overall, it still has excellent camera performance.

If you’re wondering why the P40 Pro is tested here instead of the more capable P40 Pro+ model, it’s likely Huawei is still getting the phone ready for release. After all, the Pro+ is only set to be available sometime in June 2020 globally. With the addition of another telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, we imagine it’ll get an even higher score.

Beyond the extra telephoto lens, the P40 Pro has the same camera configuration as the Pro+ model. These include a 50MP RYYB f/1.9 main shooter, a 40MP f/1.8 ultra-wide angle sensor, an 8MP f/2.4 periscope telephoto shooter with 3x optical zoom, and a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. The selfie camera, on the other hand, is a 32MP f/2.2 unit with a depth sensor.

Other specifications of the P40 Pro include a 6.58-inch 2640 x 1200 OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, Huawei’s very own Kirin 990 chipset paired with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, as well as an IP68 rating.

It’s also worth noting that the Pro has a 4,200mAh battery with support for 40W fast charging, but this is only in wired mode. Wirelessly, it can do 27W, which is still a reasonably fast rate.
