So far, Samsung only confirmed the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S20 series in Malaysia. Well, there’s a very good chance another highly anticipated smartphone is coming to our shores. That’s right, we believe the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip will be made available locally in the near future.

As usual, we were going through SIRIM’s database to look for anything peculiar. Turns out, Samsung registered a smartphone with the model number SM-F700F/DS back in 31 January 2020. We then managed to trace this model number to a user manual of the Galaxy Z Flip on Samsung’s website.

Granted, a SIRIM certification doesn’t guarantee the local availability of the Galaxy Z Flip, but it is a very promising sign. After all, it wouldn’t make sense for Samsung Malaysia to go through the trouble of registering the foldable smartphone with SIRIM and not launch the phone here, even if this has happened before with other manufacturers.

Nonetheless, the Galaxy Z Flip is Samsung’s second foldable smartphone after the Galaxy Fold. Instead of the latter’s tablet-like form factor, the Z Flip employs a more “traditional” clamshell design, much like the new Motorola Razr. Thanks to this, the Z Flip is a more ergonomically-friendly.

Sporting a 6.7-inch 2636 x 1080 Dynamic AMOLED display with a 21.9:9 aspect ratio, the Galaxy Z Flip is a rather tall smartphone when it is unfolded. Powering this device, on the other hand, is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. Not quite as quick as the latest Snapdragon 865 SoC, but it’s still a plenty capable processor.

Besides that, the Galaxy Z Flip is also equipped with a 3,300mAh battery, which should be able to return reasonably good battery life. Of course, it would’ve been great if the phone had a higher capacity cell, but there’s only so much battery that can be fitted inside the relatively compact chassis.

In the camera department, the Galaxy Z Flip doesn’t have a sophisticated camera system like the Galaxy S20 series. Instead, it has a more conventional dual camera configuration, made up of a 12MP f/1.8 primary shooter, and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide angle sensor. Not the most impressive camera setup, but should be good enough for most folks.

But there is one design element of the Galaxy S20 series that is also available on the Galaxy Z Flip: the hole-punch cutout at the top of the display for the 10MP f/2.4 selfie camera. It’s not called the Infinity-O Display though; it’s dubbed Infinity Flex Display, for obvious reasons.

At the moment, we haven’t heard from Samsung Malaysia on the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip on our shores. Rest assured, now that the foldable smartphone has been registered with SIRIM, we will keep a close eye on this matter.
