Huawei’s affordable MateBook D 15 productivity laptop is coming to Malaysia, the first market outside of China to receive the product. Retailing at only RM2,499, those who are looking to get a reasonably fast laptop with a sleek design (without breaking the bank) should give the MateBook D a gander or two.
What makes the MateBook D 15 particularly attractive is…well, how attractive it looks. With slim bezels surrounding the display, this laptop sports a modern aesthetic with an 87% screen-to-body ratio. On top of that, the minimal bezels also reduce the overall footprint of the notebook, making it that much more compact.
As for the display itself, it’s a vibrant 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 IPS screen complete with an anti-glare coating.
Great productivity laptops are designed to be portable, and the MateBook D is no different. Weighing 1.62kg (or 1.53kg without an HDD), it’s not an awfully heavy notebook. Measuring 16.9mm thin, you shouldn’t have any issue slipping the laptop into your backpack either.
Another design element of note is the MateBook D 15’s 1MP webcam, which is hidden under the keyboard in a pop-up mechanism. This particular feature is also available on other Huawei-made laptops, and it’s quite a clever piece of engineering. It also acts as a privacy shutter of sorts.
Besides that, the MateBook D is a reasonably fast laptop too. Powered by an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U quad-core processor paired with 8GB of RAM, this notebook should be powerful enough to serve as a good productivity-focused machine. Unfortunately, there’s no dedicated GPU here, so you’ll have to make do with the built-in Radeon Vega 8 Graphics.
When it comes to connectivity, the MateBook D 15 features a relatively good selection of ports. It has a USB-C port for charging and data transfer, three full-size USB-A connections – one of which is a USB 3.0 port – an HDMI output, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Other specifications of the MateBook D include 256GB of fast PCIe NVMe SSD storage, a 1TB HDD for even more storage space, a 42WHr battery, a fingerprint sensor underneath the power button, and Windows 10 Home out of the box.
The Huawei MateBook D 15 will be available for purchase in Malaysia from 18 January onwards. Only one variant of the laptop in Mystic Silver is sold here for RM2,499. That’s really quite an attractive price tag, especially for a productivity laptop as sleek as the MateBook D 15.
