Samsung Unveiling Its Next Flagship Smartphones on 11 February; 120Hz Displays in Tow?
January 6, 2020 Andrew Cheng

The first wave of flagship smartphones for 2020 is coming soon, and as usual, Samsung is one of the earliest to announce its latest flagship devices. In fact, the Korean company’s next Galaxy Unpacked event is set for next month on 11 February, and we can expect more than one product to be introduced then.

Not surprisingly, like its previous invites for Unpacked events, not much is revealed from the teaser. Only two…square blocks are shown in the video, spelling out the Galaxy branding. Samsung also mentioned that it will “unveil new, innovative devices that will shape the next decade of mobile experiences,” so we’ll likely see the unveiling of quite a number of devices at the event.

Even though the teaser is very vague, many suspect that the first square is a nod to the next Galaxy S’ camera module. Previous leaks have shown that the successor to the Galaxy S10 – which will either be called the S11 or S20, as odd as that may be – will come with a square camera module. Very similar to the design of the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite‘s camera sensors, in fact.

What about the second square? Well, that particular one is said to be none other than the Motorola Razr-esque Galaxy Fold 2; the rendering by Max J. below certainly make these speculations seem plausible. Given that the Fold 2 will supposedly come with a glass display, it’s really quite an interesting device.

Besides the announcement of the launch date, renowned leaker Ice Universe also gave some details on the upcoming Galaxy S smartphones. Just like last year, as many as three S devices will be introduced: a standard model, a Plus variant, and lastly, an “Ultra” version.

Other than the name change (there’s no “e” device like the Galaxy S10e), there’s also the refresh rate of the devices’ displays. If Ice Universe is accurate, all three Galaxy S smartphones will feature fast 120Hz screens. It’s quite an attractive upgrade, given that 120Hz refresh rate on smartphone displays still remain relatively rare.

Based on these details, Samsung’s Unpacked event on 11 February next month is shaping up to be a rather exciting launch; even more so than last year’s Unpacked.
