Oppo just showed off a rather interesting smartphone at its second annual Inno Day: the Oppo X 2021. What makes this device particularly unique is its rollable screen, which transforms the phone to a tablet in a matter of seconds.
Of course, the Oppo X 2021 is still just a concept smartphone, so it’s not a consumer-ready product yet. Regardless, it’s still a very intriguing piece of tech, and you can see the rollable display in action below. A simple gesture is all that’s needed to activate the motors that roll the flexible OLED screen.
Needless to say, it looks very impressive in action. Curiously, the user interface seems to adjust accordingly too as the Oppo X 2021’s 6.7-inch screen is expanded to a squarer, tablet-like 7.4-inch panel. Then again, we imagine this won’t be the case with any given app.
It’s worth noting that Oppo isn’t the only phone maker that teased a similar form factor. LG, for one, is said to be releasing a smartphone with a rollable screen in March next year. Codenamed Project B, it’ll be interesting to see how that phone will compare to this Oppo concept device.
Given that the Oppo X 2021 is a concept smartphone, it’s hard to say if the rollable screen tech will make it into a consumer-ready device from the Chinese company in the near future. Chances are, however, we may see more devices with a similar form factor in 2021.
