Huawei Mate 40 Pro Unveiled With 5nm Kirin 9000 Chip & 90Hz Screen

Huawei’s latest flagship smartphone is here, the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. Though it’s not radically different from its predecessor, it does bring a number of improvements, including a faster screen, a more power-efficient Kirin 9000 chip, and a new triple camera system.

Let’s start with the chipset under the hood of the Mate 40 Pro. Just like Apple with its A14 Bionic chip, Huawei is moving to a 5nm process for the new Kirin 9000 chip. This means it will be more power-efficient than the Kirin 990, and naturally, it still supports 5G networks.

Aside from that, it also has a 6.76-inch 1080p OLED screen with a fast 90Hz refresh rate, just like the P40 Pro. It would’ve been great if it had a faster 120Hz screen like its competition, but at least it’s not a conventional 60Hz display. Plus, the 90Hz screen won’t be quite as power-hungry as a 120Hz panel, which should translate to better battery life.

And then there’s the new triple camera system of the Mate 40 Pro. It’s made up of a 50MP “Ultra Vision” f/1.9 primary sensor, a 20MP f/1.8 ultra-wide angle shooter, and a 12MP f/3.4 periscope telephoto lens that can do 5x optical zoom and 50x digital zoom. There is also a laser autofocus system to lock in focus quicker and more accurately.

Other specifications of the Mate 40 Pro include a 13MP f/2.4 selfie camera paired with a 3D depth sensing camera, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of internal storage, and EMUI 11 based on Android 10 out of the box. No, it still doesn’t come with Google Mobile Services.

At the moment, we only know the Huawei Mate 40 Pro’s retail price in Europe, which is set at €1,199 (about RM5,880) for the sole 256GB model with 8GB of RAM. Do note that this price tag includes VAT, so expect it to cost less in markets outside of Europe, including Malaysia.
