iPhone 12 Pro & iPhone 12 Pro Max Bring LIDAR Scanner & Bigger Screens From RM4,899
October 14, 2020 Andrew Cheng

The regular iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini not quite up your alley? Then the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max could be for you. Compared to the standard iPhone 12, the Pro and Pro Max models feature a LIDAR scanner, more premium build quality, and in the case of the Pro Max, an even bigger screen.

Packed with a 6.7-inch 2778 x 1284 Super Retina XDR OLED screen, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the largest iPhone yet. The Pro model, on the other hand, comes with a smaller 6.1-inch 2532 x 1170 OLED screen. The display of these two phones are also protected by Apple’s new Ceramic Shield glass, which is said to be four times more resistant to breaking when dropped.

Unfortunately enough, just as rumours have suggested, Apple isn’t going with a high refresh rate screen with this year’s iPhones. The large notch at the top of the display is still retained as well, though the screen now extends further to the edges of the phone. This gives it more of an all-screen design, even though the notch is still up there.

Under the hood of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max is none other than the new A14 Bionic chip that made its debut on the new iPad Air. It’s an impressive processor that promises the best performance you can get on a smartphone, and built on a 5nm process, it’s also a very power-efficient chip.

Given the more premium positioning of iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, they are built as such. Instead of an aluminium chassis – like the standard iPhone 12 – these two models feature a stainless steel frame. Based on product images of the two phones, the chassis seems to have a glossy finish too, which should feel great to the touch.

Of course, there’s also the LIDAR scanner; a feature that’s not offered on the more affordable iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. Basically, it allows for more sophisticated AR features. It works in tandem with the triple camera system of the iPhone 12 Pro as well (12MP f/1.6 primary + 12MP f/2.4 ultra-wide angle + 12MP f/2.0 telephoto) for six times faster autofocus performance in low light conditions.

It’s worth noting that the iPhone 12 Pro Max actually comes with a different 12MP f/2.2 telephoto sensor. While the Pro can do 2x optical zoom, the Pro Max model can go slightly further at 2.5x optical zoom.

Malaysian availability of the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max has not been detailed yet, but we do have the local pricing of both phones. The iPhone 12 Pro starts at RM4,899, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max retails from RM5,299.
